| Description | The oral history interviews in this folder were recorded with indigenous and other elders in Cañar, Ecuador, remembering their lives during the hacienda period, the agrarian reform, and the formation of agricultural cooperatives (roughly 1940-1975). Antonio Quinde, a Cañari elder/activist and Judy Blankenship conducted the interviews over a period of about six years (2014-2020) – mostly in Spanish, some in Kichwa. The majority of the informants were indigenous Cañari; others were campesinos who shared the same concerns that marked the Ecuadorian agrarian reform: equitable land distribution, secure property deeds, arable land with access to water rights, protection of communal lands, and right to establish agricultural cooperatives.
