Description | In this recording, a kantule (gandule) or “fluteman” performs one of the numerous chants in the chant cycle for female puberty ceremonies (see Sherzer 1983, Prestán 1975). The performer, Camilo Lyon or Layan of Niatupu or Tigantiki, performs a text in which he successively chants a long list of formal Kuna names for women. This performance took place at home. In a real puberty ceremony, the parents of the girl for who the ceremony was held would choose her new formal name from one of those in the list. |
