Technical DescriptionUnknown photographer. The image depicts Dina Sherzer smoking a pipe like the older Kuna people did, wearing a sort of "knock off" of mola style. The photograph also includes June and Jim Howe, and Ben Howe (Jim's younger brother). This photograph was likely taken in 1971, during Sherzer's first year of research with the Kuna. Sherzer recalled that he often went to visit Jim Howe on the island where he was doing research (Joel focused on the east side of San Blas on the island of Mulatuppu). They were able to keep in contact with each other during fieldwork, communicating by inter-island mail with Jim Howe that could send messages in as little as one day. Sherzer said that it was relatively common for anthropologists to work together in groups (if they got along).
