| Description | Notebook carried by Renato Athias during a 1984 trip through Hupdë communities. The pages of the notebook contain information about each community visited: names in Hup and Portuguese, names of nearby streams [igarapés] or rivers, names of chief [capitão], clan names, the number of houses and inhabitants, and comments about distances between communities or their founding. Households are sometimes numbered, and may refer to numbered locations on village maps. The communities appear in the order in which Athias visited them on his trip from Pari Cachoeira down the Tiquié river to Iauareté the back up the Papuri river (see Athias-mapa-recto.png). Athias revisited some of these communities in 1988, and information from that later visit has been added to some pages. Some pages are mostly blank--for example, some pages name Pan Kokot, a town mentioned by Howard Reid's thesis that Athias failed to find. At the end of the notebook was found a few pages with names of clans, a partial set of vocabulary and phrases to elicit, some vocabulary terms for geographic concepts, and a sketch of the town of Nova Fundação. |
